Like modern-day Joads, Los Angeles transplants BREAK! have found fertile soil amidst the urban decay and are planting heirloom musical seeds of the varietals rock, punk, alternative, grunge, and post-punk.
Filled with edgy, energetic hard rock riffs counterbalanced with alt rock textures and pointed punk effusing, their eponymous 2018 release is a welcome kick in the teeth, something real and visceral though likely esoteric in this world of looping dance grooves. There is a rhythmic drive in their music that calls forth movement and gyration, harkening to the definition of the slang from which Rock and Roll was named. With biting and often playful lyrics, BREAK! strikes out squarely against musical apathy and demands we unite or untie, we strip off our bumper sticker identities, and we arm our hearts lest they be disarmed.
The front man, Rob Sherwood (El Hobos, Jeff August Ego Trip, New Media) plucks strings and flexes chords with a primal, ritualistic energy. The superb vocals of Miss Kim Kozel create harmonic depth and mesh well with the raspy leads. With the deft guitar picking thumbs of Justin Harris and the thunderous rhythm section of Duffey Westlake (Shotty) of Alejo Guraieb (Taura), BREAK!’s bones will shake yours.
Turn it on, crank it up, find the nearest highway and mash the gas pedal – it will all make sense as the mad world turns motion blur.
Rock. Roll. Noise. Energy. Conflict. Change. Philosophy. Love. Lust. Life. Death. These are just words, this is not art.
